Research Methods

This week we took a look at different research methods that pscyhologists use and the advantages and disadvantages of each of them.  We created an experiment to see if eating candy improves fine motor skills and we looked at the design, making sure we understood the parts of the experiment; control and experiment groups, independent and dependent variables, hypothesis.  We also took a look at ethics in psychology and how psychologists have standards set by the APA that they are required to follow.  Experiments that are famous in the history of psychology include the Stanford Prison Experiment and the Milgram Experiment.  Did the psychologist in this go to far?  Was harm done to the participants?  What standards were compromised?

Assignments that were completed this week include:
Graphic organizer on research methods
 Correlation Review
Independent and Dependent variable worksheet

Assigned this week but due September 29th.  Partners create an experiment and write up the experiment design: Include question, hypothesis, how you will set up the experiment group and control group, what are the dependent and independent variables.  (Use the experiment design that was on the overhead that you took notes on last week to help you out)

Next week we are learning statistics!

Thursday PowerPoint: History of Psychology

Wednesday Class

Today in class I introduced our new vocabulary words for section one.  The class wrote the definitions in their own words and created a graphic representation of the word.  We talked about psychology being a science and how psychologists use the scientific method so errors and biases are minimized.  We did an activity looking at behaviors both observable (actions) and unobservable (thoughts and feelings).  The assignment was a worksheet:  Application Activity 1 - The study of behavior.  Read the scenario, list behaviors of Michelle and John.  Identify one behavior and form a hypothesis for that behavior.  This is due on Thursday.

Welcome!

Welcome back to school!  I hope everyone had a great summer and that you are ready to learn about behavior and mental processes.  By studying psychology we can better understand ourselves and our relationships.  This is going to be a great semester and we will have a lot of fun.  The psychology blog is a new piece I am bringing to the classroom.  I will be trying to post all of the PowerPoints and the assignments. I am also going to see if we can get the textbook online.  If we can get the text online, you won't have to carry that heavy book around.  Just hop on the computer when you get home.  Get ready for an exciting semester!!!
